Getting rid of junk in Dubai does not always have to cost money. Dubai Municipality runs a free bulky waste collection for residents, charities accept furniture in good condition, and plenty of people will happily take a working sofa or fridge off your hands. This guide explains every free option, how to use it, and the situations where a paid removal ends up being the easier choice.
Option 1: Dubai Municipality’s free bulky waste collection
Dubai Municipality offers a free service for household items that are too big for normal bins, such as old furniture, mattresses and electrical appliances. It is the first thing to try if you live in a municipality-served area and you are not in a hurry.
How to request it
- WhatsApp or phone: message or call the municipality on 800900 and ask for bulky waste removal.
- Apps: request it through the Dubai Municipality app or the DubaiNow app, under the waste services section.
- Website: use the bulky waste removal service on the Dubai Municipality website.
After you apply, the municipality contacts you to agree a collection date. Collections usually take place in the morning, and you normally place the items outside your door or next to your building’s bins once the appointment is confirmed. You receive a confirmation message once the items have gone. Channels and timings can change, so check the municipality’s official platforms for the latest details before you book.
What it is good for
The free service works well for a few large household items, such as an old sofa, a mattress, a broken washing machine or a wardrobe you have already taken apart, when you live in a villa or a building where it is easy to bring items down to the bins yourself.
Where it falls short
- Not every area is covered. Real estate development zones and free zones are generally excluded from the municipality service, so many master-planned communities rely on their own waste arrangements instead.
- You do the carrying. The crew collects from the door or the bins. Getting a sofa down from the 25th floor, and booking the service lift to do it, is up to you.
- You wait for a slot. If your handover is tomorrow, a scheduled appointment may not arrive in time.
- It is for household bulky items. Renovation debris, large garden clear-outs and mixed loads of bags and boxes are usually outside its scope.
Option 2: Donate furniture in good condition
If your furniture is clean, complete and still usable, donating it keeps it out of landfill and helps another family. Emirates Red Crescent has run programmes that collect good quality used furniture for families in need, and other UAE charities and community groups accept household items too. Expect to send photos first: most charities only take items without stains, tears or broken parts, and mattresses are often refused for hygiene reasons.
Another option is Donate Furniture Dubai, which collects usable sofas, beds, appliances and electronics from homes in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi, free for eligible items.
Clothes, shoes, books and toys are easier. Clothing donation bins are common in residential areas and malls, and many charities accept small household goods at drop-off points.
Option 3: Give it away or sell it
A working fridge or a decent dining set will often find a new home within a day if you list it for free. Popular places to try:
- Classifieds and marketplaces such as dubizzle and Facebook Marketplace, either for a small price or as a free item for collection.
- Community groups for your building or neighbourhood, where neighbours regularly swap and give away furniture.
- Freecycle-style groups where everything is given away free to whoever collects first.
The catch is time. Expect messages, questions, people who do not turn up, and the need to be home when a buyer arrives. If you are moving, start listing at least two to three weeks before your move date.
Option 4: Ask the shop when you buy new
When you replace a fridge, washing machine or mattress, ask the retailer whether they will take the old one away when they deliver the new one. Some do this free, some charge a small fee and some do not offer it at all, so ask before you pay rather than after.
When free removal is not the right fit
Free options are worth using, but they do not suit every situation. A paid junk removal service usually makes more sense when:
- You are on a deadline, such as a lease end, a handover inspection or new tenants arriving.
- You live high up or in a strict tower that needs move-out permits, insurance documents and booked lift slots.
- Your community is not covered by the municipality’s free service.
- You have a full load, such as a whole apartment, a villa or a garage, rather than a few pieces.
- The load is mixed, including debris, garden waste, boxes and electronics alongside furniture.
- You need a disposal certificate for a landlord, an agent or building management.
In those cases, a crew that does the dismantling, carrying, lift booking and licensed disposal in one visit saves days of organising. Our furniture removal, apartment clearance and rubbish removal services are all priced at one fixed figure before we arrive. Usable items still go to charity partners, so you get the same outcome as donating, without the waiting. See our junk removal price guide for typical costs.
A simple plan that combines both
- Three weeks out: list anything valuable or in very good condition for sale or for free.
- Two weeks out: contact a charity about furniture that has not gone, and request the municipality’s free collection for a few bulky items if your area is covered.
- The final week: book a paid clearance for whatever is left, so nothing is still in the flat on handover day.

Frequently asked questions
Is junk removal free in Dubai?
Dubai Municipality offers a free bulky waste collection for household items such as furniture and appliances in the areas it serves. You request it through its apps, website or 800900, and it collects from your door or the bins on an agreed date.
How do I request bulky waste collection from Dubai Municipality?
Use the Dubai Municipality app, the DubaiNow app, the municipality website, or WhatsApp or call 800900. The municipality then contacts you to schedule a collection.
Does the free service cover every community in Dubai?
No. Real estate development zones and free zones are generally excluded, so residents of many master-planned communities need to use their community arrangements or a private removal service.
Will charities in Dubai collect my old sofa?
Some will, if it is clean and in good condition. Most charities ask for photos first and decline stained, damaged or very old furniture. Mattresses are often not accepted.
When is it worth paying for junk removal?
When you are on a deadline, live in a tower that needs permits and lift bookings, have a full apartment or villa to clear, or need a disposal certificate for a landlord or agent.
